Life Is Rich

Colleen Gray was impressed when she met Sharron at her exhibition at the Hamilton Portside Boutique Markets where Sharron exhibits every 2nd Sunday of the month.  Colleen had been having problems with her decorating of the new family home in elegant Bulimba and hoped Sharron would be able to help.  Like most of these homes the soaring ceilings of the old Queenslander compared to the 4 x 4 metre square living room space which also shared a hallway was proving a little difficult to decorate.

Colleen revelled in the rules of decor and how to use a colour wheel taught to her at her appointment.  Suddenly, it all clicked and she was amazed at how easily Sharron had been able to explain so much and in only an hour.  Now she understood how the eye travels around a room, how colours not typical of the rooms palette would grab the eye and about proportion of furniture to space.  Importantly, Colleen learnt about timbers and how to get unity in a space through grouping timber species....the list went on.

Sharron suggested a cavity be cut away from one wall above the TV and to replace furniture there with a long low cabinet.  This would provide a see through area to the stairway on the other side, and so increase space in the room, allow Colleen to display a cluster of black and white family photos rather than have them hidden in the stairwell.

The cavity size was measured and then this size became the new artwork size, so creating balance in the room and, being a landscape format, help bring the eye down from the ceiling rather than travelling upwards as the pre-existing Klimt print encouraged.

Colleen wasn't sure what she wanted for her art.  She loved Gauguin, rich muted colours, had happy memories of time under a Poinsettia tree, being in the mountains and a holiday at one of the lakes at Fraser Island...so Sharron designed a artwork around all of these which impressed Colleen no end.

Going through the WFYH unique creative process was reassuring for Colleen and once her art was delivered, her amazement was complete and she immediately booked in a Works With Little Pros session for her son for later in 2010.  Her husband Greg who was at home when Sharron called to follow up on the large artworks delivery, was just tickled pink and couldn't believe how good the work looked, better than the photos and the enormous difference it made to the room.  You're welcome Colleen and Greg!

Decor hints for tall ceilings

  • Bring the eye down with the use of horizontal lines which are present in long low furniture, dado rails and skirting boards.

  • Tall artworks, furniture, vertical striped fabrics etc will take the eye up and should be balanced with low horizontal lines.

  • You can balance the distance between furniture heights and the ceiling height by the level achieved when you add indoor plants like palms etc and tall floor lamps and thereby add colour, atmosphere and style.

  • You can, in old Queenslanders, paint the lower wall section, beneath the dado rail, in a colour and keep the top section lighter and in this way, encourage the eye down from the ceiling.

  • Furniture shouldn't be too low in a room with very tall ceilings as it is then out of proportion.  Stick to moderately higher pieces and make sure all the heights are the same so the eye isn't jumping up and down as it travels.

  • You can use colour to encourage the eye downwards too. Rugs that have your accent colors in them and are reasonably bright (really bright colours, especially as external paint colours, don't suit old Queenslanders that well), will attract the eye.

  • About balance.  Large walls suit large artworks.  Too many small pieces of anything and everything in your decor will add to a cluttered appearance.

  • If desirable, create a cavity in an enclosed room so it has a view to the next and in this way, create more horizontals line and increase space and style.  Just ensure the cavity lines up with any existing windows!
