Earthly Delights

Sharron Tancred has painted art now for all of her best friends except Helen Martin who was firmly of the belief that one doesn't keep stuff for a lifetime...it's just not that precious. All the same, Helen was revamping her kitchen and chose to have art above her cook top rather than cupboards.  What to do?

Sharron first gave her friend a decor lesson and taught her the art of matching colours.  A month later, she returned to a very different living/dining/kitchen area!  Helen had totally picked up on decorating, having never really showing any interest in it before.  Sharron was pretty impressed.  Together they talked about what art would compliment Helen's new decor and you can see the thumbnail sketch in the photos and how it progressed.

The most important part of this story though, is the Glass Coating of the artwork, because it allows Helen to clean it, with mentholated spirits, and to never worry about any unsightly, sticky yellow residue.  Ick!  The  best thing about the Glass Coat on this artwork, was that it made the white on white textured background look like marble.  Seriously nice.

Helen loves her art and feels very emotionally attached to it having helped design it herself. It's precious and now she's decided to do the formal lounge next!  Happy to help H!

Decor Tips

  • Sometimes styles just clash and this is one of those occasions.  Replace the octagonal white gloss dining room table with either a snazzy, modern styled suite in timber to match the new TV cabinet or a sleek gloss silver and textured glass suite.  Buy a larger matching coffee table as well which has a storage facility underneath such as drawers or shelf.

  • The print on the green feature wall is the right colours though a landscape proportion would better suit the wall proportion.  So much ready made art is portrait shaped when it is the large walls that are the most difficult to find art for.  If you can't find landscape art, then buy another matching portrait version and hang 10cm apart and you'll achieve a better effect.

  • Position a shag pile rug under the coffee table to warm the space.  It is important that rugs not sit under 1 or 2 legs of any furniture as this over time, tends to warp the rug and warps, don't come out.  Choose the moss green from the striped cushion, preferably a little darker for tonal variation, in glossy shag pile will add warmth, take up the space and give pizazz.  A geometric pattern could work instead and add more design content, though this isn't really Helen's thing.

  • A good way to check if a rug will match your room, other than checking your colour wheel is to photograph it before you buy; measure it too of course, go home and view the image against your room fromthe camera.  A little voice will tell you if it is right or not.

  • Make the kitchen kettle area into a grouping of objects to better frame the wall space left of the artwork.  Pop the cook book into a decorative stand and position a tall textured glass container holding those extra long strips of curly edged pasta inside, or perhaps an interesting lght coloured lamp or sculpture. Just keep the objects suitable to the kitchen, light coloured, so the flowers and art are the heroes and decorative!
